The Hargreaves Foundation supports Independence at Home
We are so delighted to share the wonderful news that The Hargreaves Foundation have agreed to support Independence at Home for three years with funding towards the provision of mobility and disability equipment, educational aids and software to help transform the lives of young people living with disabilities.
We know that getting the right equipment can make a huge difference to the independence of young people within sport and education and we are enormously grateful to The Hargreaves Foundation for their generous support. View the details on The Hargreaves Foundation website.

Edward Gostling Foundation Award Major Grant
At its Annual Strategy Day on 9th July the Edward Gostling Foundation agreed to increase its annual grant to Independence at Home to £100,000 p.a. for five years, backdated to April 2019, to support our clients.
This is wonderful news for Independence at Home and our clients, particularly as this funding is unrestricted and we can use it to help meet the varied needs of our clients who live in locations throughout the UK.
We are enormously grateful to the Foundation for its support and look forward to working in partnership to help more people in need.
Anthony Ford Shubrook awarded the OBE
Congratulations to Anthony Ford Shubrook, one of our beneficiaries, who has just been awarded the OBE for supporting children with disabilities getting into education in the poorest of African countries. Anthony has Cerebral Palsy and Independence at Home was able to help with a grant for a height adjustable desk that supports his upper body and arms when he is working. It is incredible what he does for others despite his own significant difficulties.
Increasing support from The ACT Foundation
At the end of 2017, the ACT Foundation entered into a strategic partnership with Independence at Home. It approved a £100,000 grant to be paid over a 5 year period. We’re delighted to announce that the Foundation will be doubling this support for the next four years of the strategic partnership to £40,000 per year.
We are most grateful to the ACT Foundation for their support, which will enable more people who need home adaptations and urgent house repairs to continue to live in their own homes.
In addition, from January 2019, the Foundation will be donating a separate grant of £10,000 towards grants for specialist mobility equipment. This will help vulnerable people to be safer at home and will make it easier for them to get out and about and engage in their local and wider communities.

Discover our Chair Yoga Experience at John Lewis & Partners
We’re so pleased to share that Independence at Home is hosting a Chair Yoga workshop on Wednesday 24 October at 11am in the Discovery Room, Floor 3 at John Lewis & Partners, Westfield.
Chair Yoga is a gentle, great way to try out specially adapted yoga poses whilst seated on a chair. It’s a fun activity that gets you moving and helps improve physical, mental and emotional well-being. There are many benefits, including improved flexibility, better concentration, increased strength and reduced joint strain. Best of all, it’s easy and simple to practise at home or anywhere you can find a place to sit.
The Chair Yoga workshop is fully inclusive and suitable for all. Participants will be taught by an experienced yoga teacher, and will pick up great tips to improve their health and wellbeing.
This is a free session for participants over 18, and we recommend you wear loose, comfortable clothing. Spaces are limited so if you’d like to try Chair Yoga out, book your place now.
Press release – £1,000 donation from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation
Harrow-based charity Independence at Home, received a donation from Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation. The donation will help to transform daily life at home for 12 people living with disability and long term illness.
Independence at Home was put forward for the £1,000 donation by colleagues at the Society’s Harrow branch, on St. Ann’s Road.
The donation will enable the charity to make grants to those in need towards the purchase of mobility and disability equipment, home adaptations and other essential items to make a positive impact on 12 peoples’ daily lives at home.
Independence at Home was founded in October 1965. Since then, the grants it provides have improved independence and freedom for over 42,000 people from all parts of the UK.
Rina Rawal, Independence at Home’s Fundraising Executive, commented: “Generous support from donors like the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, help us to continue improving quality of life in and around home for vulnerable people of all ages. Those we support are struggling to manage every day activities and are in financial need. We’re very grateful to Steven English and the Foundation for their kindness.”
Steve English, manager of the Society’s Harrow branch, said: “Our Charitable Foundation is funded by our members and without their generosity we wouldn’t be able to support worthwhile causes such as Independence at Home.
In 2017, the Charitable Foundation donated £234,684 to more than 200 charities and good causes nominated by members and colleagues from around the UK.
Recent Donations
We truly appreciate the generosity of our donors and it is with their kind help that we can continue supporting people living at home with a disability and long term illness who are in financial need.
Independence at Home would like to thank Next Plc for their recent donation of £5,000 and also the Bawden Fund for a donation of £3,672. Every penny of the funds donated will be used to make grants.
£10,000 donation from the Morrisons Foundation
Independence at Home welcomes the Morrisons Foundation as a new donor. We are delighted that Trustees awarded our charity a £10,000 donation which was presented to us at the Harrow branch just before Christmas. Every penny of the funds donated will be used to make grants to people living at home with a disability and long term illness who are in financial need.
The Harrow branch had previously supported Independence at Home with a donation of goody bags for our team of runners taking part in Parallel London 2017.
We are truly grateful for the wonderful support given to us by the Foundation and to the local charity’s team.
£100,000 donation from the ACT Foundation
The ACT Foundation has recently approved a grant of £100,000 to Independence at Home to be paid over a five year partnership.

£25,000 donation from the Dulverton Trust
The Dulverton Trust has very generously donated £25,000 to Independence at Home. The Trust has a long history of supporting our charity and we are truly grateful for their continued help. The funds will be used to provide grants for older people to help towards the cost of special equipment and home adaptations, helping to improve active living.

Lebanese delights at Charity Dinner
Launched in mid-October and running to the end of November, Lebanese restaurant Sougtani in Pinner, will be raising funds for Independence at Home.
Restaurant Director, Tareq Idbihi and his team will be encouraging diners to donate an optional £1 to their bill in aid of Independence at Home. The fundraising will conclude with a dinner at the restaurant on Thursday 7th December at 7pm. The charity dinner costs £25 per person to include hot and cold starters, a main course and Moroccan mint tea with baklava for dessert. £5 from the set menu cost will be donated to our charity.

Ian runs for Independence at Home
On Sunday 22 October at 10am, Ian Davies took part in the Great South Run through historic Portsmouth, in aid of Independence at Home. We were delighted that Ian completed the 10 mile race in 1 hour, 24 minutes and 38 secs which beat his personal best time by 2 seconds!
Although it was a lovely sunny day, the blustery coastal wind made the last two miles of the race hard going, but seasoned runner Ian was determined to forge ahead.

On Sunday 3 September 13 members of Team Independence took part in Parallel London 2017 at the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Parallel London is a fully inclusive multi-distance fun run, designed for all ages and abilities. The fun run is the centrepiece of a FREE family festival.
Our team thoroughly enjoyed the event with one member taking part in the 10km and finishing in the TOP 50! Other team members ran or walked 5km. We’re delighted to share that so far £2,400 has been raised in sponsorship and will be used towards grant making. We’re still fundraising, so please click here to make a donation.

We’re delighted to share with you that at year ended 31 March 2017, Independence at Home distributed a total of £378,260 making 1,220 grants to people with a disability or long term illness who were in financial need. The grants we made will help beneficiaries to obtain mobility and disability equipment, home adaptations and other essential items needed to improve daily life.
It’s only with the kind support of Charitable Trusts and Foundations, businesses and individuals that we can continue making grants to those in greatest need. Every penny of donations received is used to make grants, improving safety, comfort, dignity, quality of life and independence in and around the home.
