A Tribute to Prof. Linda M Luxon CBE.

We were deeply saddened to learn at the beginning of September 2023 of the death of long-standing Trustee and esteemed colleague Prof. Linda M. Luxon CBE.  Professor Luxon is fondly remembered for her vision which resulted in the merger with Queens Square and her steadfast contribution to the charity’s leadership and governance over many years.

Linda had studied medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital, London and trained in Neurology and Neuro-otology at the Middlesex and National Hospitals in London. She was the first female consultant physician at the National Hospital, Queen Square and was appointed Professor of Audiovestibular Medicine at UCL in 1992.

A world leader in her field, she authored more than 120 peer-reviewed research papers and edited award-winning textbooks on audiovestibular medicine. She was appointed national clinical champion in audiology. Many patients’ lives were improved by her compassionate care.

In 2010, Professor Luxon was appointed CBE for services to medicine and was the Royal College of Physicians’ treasurer until 2018 – the first woman to hold the post.

As well as her position at RCP, Linda was a long-standing Director/Trustee of Independence at Home, treasurer of the Royal Society of Medicine and had also been president or chair of several bodies including the British Society of Audiology, UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, the International Association of Physicians in Audiology and the European Federation of Audiological Societies.

As has been said elsewhere so eloquently, “Those who knew her will remember her for her kindness and intelligence, her grace, her energy, her faith and her zest for life.”
